Please sign this petition, particularly if Mike Coffman is your congressman because you live in CO CD6.
This is the text of the petition:
Instead of playing politics with the federal budget and creating fiscal uncertainty, we call on you to grow the middle class by ending the sequester, investing in jobs and education, and closing corporate tax loopholes.
And this is the background from the petition page:
Congress has 5 days scheduled before the Sep. 30 budget deadline to avoid a government shutdown. But some Republicans won't even negotiate unless Obamacare is defunded — and they're using the deadline to gain leverage.
We need Rep. Mike Coffman to stop playing games and stand with the middle class during the budget debate. Unless we act quickly and hold him accountable, he and other House Republicans will keep proposing more cuts to education, healthcare, and other vital services.
That was a couple of days ago, apparently, because there are now only three days until a government shutdown.
Coffman has said he is opposed to a shutdown:
I’m absolutely opposed to shutting down the federal government when we have flood victims in need of disaster relief, seniors who depend on Medicare and Social Security, and members of our military and their families who have made so many sacrifices and deserve to be paid.
That is a surprising mixture of correct and incorrect information. (Well, since it is Coffman, maybe that shouldn't be so surprising.) It is not true that Medicare and Social Security payments would be cut off, but there is a definite possibility that Colorado flood relief could be delayed, and because "a cold, snowy winter soon approaches here in Colorado" there is no time to lose.
Despite this opposition it is good to let him know where we stand because he will undoubtedly be subject to pressure to vote for a shutdown.
